I was introduced to Velourlips last year by my sister. Initially I was hesitant as the first edition colours were extremely bright and I was a little self conscious. But with the release of two more sets of colours since then (including muted shades) and my recent love of any and every bright lip colour, I’m an official convert. The colour payoff is intense, the staying power is beyond amazing, the range of shades allows most people to find a shade for them and most importantly they are INEXPENSIVE…budget conscious ladies rejoice 😉 They are only $15, with the colour and staying power of something three times the price.
They are a lip cream which goes on wet and dries matte, like mega matte. I’ve heard some people say they find them quite drying, but in my experience I apply a lip balm prior to the Velourlips and it’s all good! The main reason I like them and why I find them so freakin mummy-friendly is their longevity, through eating and drinking and over the course of the day, they just stay put! I wore this colour recently to a wedding with a cobalt blue dress (it was awesome if I do say so myself) and I got asked at least three times by friends mid-conversation, “Alasha, what is that lipstick? It doesn’t come off! It’s amazing!”. Now for me, that speaks volumes, when other women want to know the magical secret!
If you like the matte look, I highly reccomend you try these, I have a huge collection that I’ll swatch at a later date. But if you don’t like matte, then stay away, they probably aren’t for you! However Australis has another range of long wear lipsticks called Go Long, and they are also pretty amazing for staying power.
The pictured shade is Australis Velourlips in Shang-Hi!
Mummy-friendly rating: 8/10. If your bold enough to splash some serious colour over your lips, then this product will last through any play date and beyond!
When you’re on a very limited budget, sometimes you need to get a little crafty with your ideas. No longer do I just throw something out that is a bit ‘broken’, instead I have to think about whether I can fix, upcycle or refashion it. Case in point, these boyfriend jeans…
Last year I really wanted a pair of these jeans but my budget didn’t allow for it. I was lucky enough to have a good friend who gave these to me (when she upgraded to an awesome pair of Guess boyfriend jeans). I very happily obliged to take this pair off her hands (score!!). I wore them to death…literally. The ‘cool’ ripped knee look ended up being the ‘gaping flap’ uncool look. Enter, a bit of lace, needle and thread and boom! Repaired jeans with a ‘cool’ lace patch insert 🙂
The process was super easy and took about 30mins. Firstly I cut a square of lace purchased from Spotlight for $2.50 and lay it over the gaping whole while the jeans were inside out. I ended up using a double layer as it gave the lace a bit more sturdiness and looked less likely to rip down the track. I turned the jeans back the right way and hand sewed small stitches all the way around the patch. When finished stitching I flipped the jeans back inside out, checked my workmanship to make sure the lace was in place well enough, then trimmed the excess lace. Done!
I’m glad I was able to ‘rescue’ these jeans. They are such an on-trend staple in my wardrobe and by patching them up I also saved a whole bunch of money…that I don’t have anyway…because this Stay At Home Mum gig doesn’t pay too well 😉
This week it has become more ‘normal’ to think about my hairstyle for the day as opposed to just giving consideration to my outfit.
Nothing too outrageous though this week, just good, mummy-friendly/time poor, quick styles that aren’t just a plain pony! The most ‘new’ style to me would have to be the braided crown. I wasn’t blessed with gorgeous thick locks like The Barefoot Blonde in the tutorial (goodness me she’s stunning), but it was something different nonetheless ☺️
I just adore the look of long layered necklaces. There is something feminine, chic and ‘easy’ about the way the look and what they add to an outfit.
My only barrier to wearing this look is a certain almost two year old and his grabby hands 😒 But today while I was out and about I came across a sale at Lovisa, where I was able to pick up these three necklaces for only $12NZD.
For this price I feel comfortable ‘experimenting’ with this cute look…if son number two gets a little grabby, it’s not too much money lost! Are there any other mums out there that successfully wear long layered necklaces? Give me some hope hehe! I’ll report back and let you know if it was a success for me!
Last week I visited the pharmacy after a visit to the doctors courtesy of Mr 1’s recurrent ear infections. Along with the prescription I picked up one of these Miki Big Lippy sticks (well actually I also picked up an eyeliner as it was any two Miki products for $8 – the standard Miki deal…but I’ll chat about that later). I picked this product for two main reasons, 1) a lipstick crayon would be super easy and quick to apply (mummy must #1) and it was so inexpensive (mummy must #2). The big question I had though is, would it last? No mum (or busy person in general) has the time to be reapplying lipstick or any sort of makeup at regular intervals over the day. Well it’s safe to say I was pleasantly surprised! It lasted well for about 4 hours including breakfast and lunch in between. The only downfall was that after a few hours it left my lips feeling a bit dry, but as a mum I always have PawPaw ointment in my nappy bag, so that was quickly fixed. I will definitely be purchasing more of these…no doubt the next time my son is under the weather 😉
Just thought I’d pop up a quick pick of my manicure this week, and when I say ‘manicure’, I mean a quick slap on of nail polish while the boys were drinking their milk last night! I personally love seeing other peoples manicures as it acts as a great way to see swatches of nail polishes to add to my ‘I Want’ list. The ‘statement nail’ has got to be the easiest mummy-friendly nail trend to pull off, here is mine in ‘OPI Sparke de Triomphe’ paired with ‘Coral’ (I know, it’s not coral at all, it’s actually more fluoro orange, I was shocked when I read the name!) -a $2 bargain from Factorie. Here’s to imperfect mummy-nails and post milkies cuddles…the type that don’t smudge newly painted nails 😜
Another week, another few new hairstyles and accessories! I’m working on stepping it up and stepping out of my mum ponytail comfort zone…
These hairstyles were all easy, fast and fun, which is exactly what I am looking for. They have all been inspired by either Pinterest or You Tube, the links can be found below.
This was way easier than it looked, and by some fluke I required NO bobby pins to keep this in place! You can find the tutorial link, here.
I am in love with hair donuts, they literally are a mums best friend!
Quick curls, like actually quick! You can check out my previous post for more about this style, or check out the tutorial I used here.
Plain and simple, this headband was a winner at the park with my kids…until a bee thought I was a flower with all that color! This particular headband is from Colette, which has got to be one of my favourite accessory stores.
So that’s this week in hair pics, totally mummy friendly and totally adding a bit more ‘pretty’ into my life👍
